Acropolis Museum artifacts showcased in Chania photography exhibition

A photography exhibition by Maria Louzakli featuring the marble sculptures of the Acropolis Museum opened at the Great Arsenali in Chania from 15 – 28 July 2026. The show presents the statues as “invisible lives,” using light and shadow to invite viewers to contemplate the unseen perspectives of the ancient works. Curator and art historian Christos Marinos highlighted the exhibition’s focus on the interplay of visual perception and cultural memory, while photography scholar Geoffrey Batchen noted its material and cultural significance. The exhibition bridges the historic sites of Athens and Chania, offering a visual dialogue between the two ancient citadels.

The display aims to deepen public engagement with Greek heritage, encouraging audiences to consider how the marble figures “see” the world when attention shifts elsewhere. Organized by the Municipality of Chania, the event underscores the role of contemporary art in interpreting classical antiquities.
