ACT faces housing approval drop and infrastructure job cuts

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has seen a significant decline in housing approvals, with dwelling approvals falling by 33.6 per cent in July. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics data, 257 homes were approved, down from 387 in June. While the Property Council ACT and Capital Region noted that the pipeline requires more consistency to meet demand, the ACT Government maintains that the territory remains on track to meet its target of 30,000 new homes by 2030.

Simultaneously, Infrastructure Canberra has announced it will offer voluntary redundancies to its staff. The agency, which manages major territory projects, has not yet disclosed the total number of positions to be cut. The Community and Public Sector Union expressed concern that these job cuts could lead to delays in significant developments, including the new North Canberra Hospital and the Commonwealth Park aquatic centre.
