ACT joins federal Australian gun buyback scheme

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has agreed to join a federal gun buyback scheme, becoming the second jurisdiction to do so after New South Wales. The initiative was established in response to the mass shooting at Bondi Beach in December, which resulted in 15 deaths.

Under the agreement, the federal government will cover 75 per cent of the costs related to compensation for firearm holders, administration, and the destruction of weapons. The federal government will also bear the full cost of destroying the firearms. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the reform is a critical step in preventing future anti-Semitic terrorist attacks.

In the ACT, there are approximately 23,000 registered firearms and over 7,000 license holders. A proposed cap on the number of firearms is expected to affect roughly 14 per cent of these license holders. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr noted that while most gun owners are responsible, additional safety measures are necessary to reduce the risk of weapons falling into the wrong hands.
