ACT Legislative Assembly contracts armed guards amid rising threats

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislative Assembly has contracted armed security guards for the first time following an escalation in threats against politicians. Speaker Jeremy Hanson stated that the decision follows a security review and increased risk assessments from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and the Australian Federal Police.

Hanson identified two primary drivers for the increased risk: politically motivated violence and threats from fixated individuals. The security upgrades include the deployment of armed guards, enhanced physical security at the building entrance, and improved surveillance through new security cameras and access points.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr noted that the abuse directed at politicians has become more frequent and severe in tone. The move comes in the wake of an attack on Member of Parliament Helen Haines and follows surveys indicating that many members have faced threats of physical violence, sexual violence, and death.
