ACT Magistrates Court refuses bail for man charged with sexual assault of vulnerable victim

A man accused of a multi‑day sexual assault on a vulnerable victim was denied bail by Special Magistrate Lucinda Wilson in the ACT Magistrates Court on 5 August. He faces one count of sexual intercourse without consent and has a history of breaching court orders across several states. The magistrate said the alleged offences posed an “unjustifiable risk” to the community and highlighted a very high risk of the accused interfering with witnesses or evidence if released. The defence argued the man’s mental‑health diagnoses made him vulnerable in custody and sought his release to reside with his ill mother in a regional NSW town, but the court rejected the request. The next hearing is scheduled for September.
