Action-Chômage Côte-Nord sends 2,500 postcards to federal minister

Action-Chômage Côte-Nord has sent approximately 2,500 postcards to Federal Minister of Employment, Families and Disability Support Patty Hajdu to demand reforms to the employment insurance system. The campaign aims to highlight the “black hole” experienced by seasonal workers in sectors such as tourism, fisheries, and forestry, who often run out of benefits before their next season begins.

Line Sirois, the organization’s general director, stated that the postcards serve as a symbol to help federal officials understand the reality of workers in the region. The group is seeking permanent and sustainable measures to address these gaps in coverage. This follows a previous letter sent last year supported by 85 signatories, including business owners and regional representatives from Manicouagan, Sept-Rivières, and Minganie.

A recent survey conducted by the organization involving over 100 residents revealed that 40% of respondents are considering leaving the Côte-Nord region due to the employment insurance gap.
