Action discount retailer: Why XXL packs may not always save money

While large XXL packs are often perceived as better value, consumers should verify the unit price to ensure actual savings. At the discount retailer Action, which operates over 3,300 stores across 15 European countries, including more than 650 in Germany, large packaging does not always guarantee a lower cost per unit.

To accurately compare products, shoppers should look at the base price (Grundpreis) printed on the shelf label, such as the price per 100 grams, per liter, or per sheet. For example, a smaller chocolate bar might appear cheaper due to its total price, but its price per kilogram could be higher than a larger bar. In some cases, such as with toilet paper, larger rolls may contain less paper per unit than competitors when calculated by the price per sheet.

Consumers can report suspicious packaging or incorrect unit pricing to local authorities, such as the Eichamt, or use the deceptive packaging list provided by the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg.
