Action retailer utilizes rotating inventory model to drive growth
Dutch non-food discounter Action is experiencing rapid expansion across Europe, operating over 3,300 stores in 15 countries, including more than 650 locations in Germany. The company utilizes a high-turnover inventory model where approximately two-thirds of its roughly 6,000 products are temporary items that change frequently. Reports indicate that between 150 and 200 products are replaced weekly, meaning customers may find items unavailable during subsequent visits.
While Action often undercuts competitors in direct price comparisons for household and leisure goods, some product tests suggest the price advantage varies when accounting for quantity, such as the amount of paper per roll in certain household items.
On the corporate side, Action has been recognized as the fastest-growing company in the Netherlands, receiving the ‘Golden Scaler Award’ in 2025. The retailer also emphasizes sustainability and diversity, reporting a 56 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2021 and employing staff from 166 different nations.
