Activision sees massive success with Black Ops re-releases
The recent re-releases of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 have significantly exceeded Activision's internal sales expectations, with over 11 million copies sold across both consoles.
Activision Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl noted that the success was driven by player nostalgia and the desire to play classic multiplayer titles with friends. The company indicated that these results will influence future strategies, including potential further ports and how they integrate classic elements into new titles.
However, the commercial success has drawn criticism from original developers. Gavin Goslin, a veteran of Treyarch, expressed a bittersweet sentiment regarding the profits. He argued that while the longevity of the titles is impressive, the financial benefits are primarily being captured by Activision executives rather than the developers who endured intense 'crunch' periods to create the original games. Goslin suggested that revenue from these classic ports should be shared retroactively with the creators.
