Activists Carles Dolç and Joan Contijoch pass away
Carles Dolç, a prominent architect, urbanist, and social activist in Valencia, has died. Dolç was a key figure in the anti-Francoist struggle and a leader within the Communist Movement of the Valencian Country during the transition and 1980s. His professional work and activism significantly influenced Valencia's urban landscape, including the preservation of the Turia riverbed as a park, the protection of neighborhoods like El Carme and El Cabanyal, and the defense of the local agricultural land (la horta). In 2015, the Valencia City Council named him a Favorite Son of the city.
Joan Contijoch, a significant figure in the independence movement in Sant Cugat, has also passed away. Contijoch played a central role in organizing the 2009 sovereignty consultation in Sant Cugat and was a founding member of the local branch of the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) in 2011. His influence extended to the national level through his service on the ANC National Secretariat. Beyond politics, he was active in local cultural initiatives, such as the return of the Flama del Canigó to Sant Cugat in 2006.
