Activists demand rights for homeless populations in Mexico and Uruguay

Activists and collectives in Mexico and Uruguay have mobilized to mark the International Day of Action on Homelessness, calling for greater visibility and institutional support for vulnerable populations.

In Mexico, during the “Sin techo, con derechos” forum, advocates highlighted the specific challenges faced by LGBT+ individuals living on the streets. Arturo Soto of the NGO Mi Valedor noted that homelessness often intersects with other layers of exclusion, making cases more complex. Ulises Pineda from the Human Rights Commission emphasized that a lack of gender perspective and identity recognition prevents effective public service access.

In Uruguay, demonstrators marched to protest social and institutional indifference. Participants called for policies that promote dignity and sought to combat the stigma surrounding extreme poverty and mental health issues, urging the public to recognize the reality of homelessness within the country.
