Activists launch “abortomat” pill locker system in Warsaw
Activists in Warsaw have launched the “abortomat,” a specialized locker system designed to provide anonymous and rapid access to pills for pharmacological abortion. Located at a support center near the Polish Parliament on Wiejska Street, the pink device contains 22 compartments where users can collect medication using a PIN code provided by feminist organizations.
The initiative is led by the Abortion Dream Team in collaboration with Women Help Women, a Canadian-based organization. Organizers state the system aims to simplify access to abortion medication and bypass the delays associated with traditional mail delivery. They describe the device as a “subterfuge” against current restrictive laws, noting that while assisting an abortion is a criminal offense in Poland, the law does not penalize women for performing the procedure themselves.
The launch has sparked significant legal and social debate. Legal experts warn that operating the machine could be classified as aiding and abetting an abortion, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years under the Polish Penal Code. Additionally, some distributed medications may not be officially approved for sale in Poland or may require specific prescriptions. The opening of the center has also drawn protests from conservative Catholic groups.
