Activists seek German investigation into Iranian human rights abuses

Human rights activists have launched a legal initiative in Germany to seek accountability for alleged crimes against humanity committed by Iranian government officials. Supported by German lawyers and the organization Upright, the group submitted a 109-page request to the German Federal Prosecutor to initiate a structural investigation (Strukturermittlungsverfahren) regarding the suppression of nationwide protests that occurred in December 2025 and January 2026.

The request is based on months of research, including over 60 interviews with victims, witnesses, and families, alongside digital evidence and analysis of weapons and injuries. The documentation identifies more than 50 suspects, mapping their organizational roles and command structures. To support this effort, a public event was held in Berlin to engage policymakers, legal experts, and civil society.

Separately, reports indicate that Hossein Ahmadi, a political prisoner held in Isfahan's central prison, is being denied medical treatment. Ahmadi, who underwent spinal surgery shortly before his arrest, is reportedly suffering from increased pain due to a lack of access to physiotherapy and specialized medical care. He faces charges including “inciting people to war and slaughter to disrupt national security,” “insulting the leadership,” and “insulting sanctities.”
