Imran Khan to challenge India exit order in Bombay High Court

Bollywood actor Imran Khan, a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, has been ordered to leave India by October 28. The directive was issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) following his participation in a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The demonstration, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The notice was issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, following a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan’s involvement in political activities violated regulations for foreign nationals. Khan’s legal team, led by Zulfiqar Memon, has decided to challenge the order in the Bombay High Court, arguing that OCI cardholders are not expressly prohibited from participating in peaceful protests.

The incident has drawn varied reactions. Veteran actor Raza Murad supported the authorities, stating that foreign nationals should not interfere in India’s internal politics. Conversely, filmmaker Kiran Rao and several opposition leaders defended Khan, emphasizing his long-standing ties to India. The legal dispute is expected to test the boundaries of political participation rights for OCI holders.
