Actor Randolph Mantooth, Star of 1970s TV Show “Emergency!”, Dies at 80

Actor Randolph Mantooth died on July 9 at age 80 in a hospice facility in Ventura, California. He succumbed to complications from pneumonia after battling various cancers for several years.

Mantooth was best known for portraying paramedic John Gage on NBC’s 1970s drama “Emergency!”, a series credited with popularising the concept of modern paramedics and inspiring many first‑responders. His television career spanned five decades, including guest roles on shows such as *Sons of Anarchy*, *ER*, *Baywatch* and long‑running soap operas like *General Hospital* and *Loving*.

In 1975, Mantooth and co‑star Kevin Tighe served as grand marshals of Ellsworth, Maine’s Firemen’s Parade, an event that drew thousands of spectators and hundreds of fire units from New England and Canada. He remained an active advocate for firefighters and emergency‑medical personnel throughout his life.
