Actor Wu Kang-ren faces controversy over potential script changes in drama ‘Zhu Guniang’

Actor Wu Kang-ren is facing backlash from fans of the original novel following reports that the upcoming historical drama ‘Zhu Guniang’ may have significantly altered the source material. The series, starring Chen Lijun and Wei Zheming, is adapted from the novel ‘Zhu Guniang Jin Tian Diao Keng Le Mei’.

Leaked production schedules suggest that the script may have added a romantic subplot between the female lead, Zhu Ying, and Wu’s character, Wang Yunhe, who serves as her mentor. Fans of the original work have expressed outrage, arguing that the novel is a ‘no-CP’ (no romantic pairing) story focused on the female protagonist's independent career and growth. Critics claim these changes undermine the core themes of the book and suggest the additions were made to increase screen time for the award-winning actor.

While Wu’s historical costume has received praise, the controversy regarding character dynamics continues. The production team has not yet issued an official response regarding the alleged script modifications.
