Actress Christiane Torloni Opens Up About Losing Son Guilherme in 1991 Car Accident

Brazilian actress Christiane Torloni, who is about to turn 70, says she has found moments of peace while learning to surf, a sport she has long wanted to try. She is currently performing in Rio de Janeiro in the play “Dois de Nós,” where her character also experiences a tragedy.

Torloni recalls that in 1991 a car accident in her home garage killed her 12‑year‑old son Guilherme, describing it as “the greatest trial of a mother.” She says the loss required a delicate, ongoing process of rebuilding her sense of life. The support she received at the time—letters and messages of affection— helped her keep going. Guilherme was the son of her former partner, director Dennis Carvalho. Torloni also comments on ageism and reflects on how she views life and sexuality as she ages.
