Acupuncture identified as complementary option for restless legs syndrome
Dr. Onur Aksoy, a radiology and GETAT specialist at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, has identified acupuncture as a potential complementary option for managing restless legs syndrome (RLS). He emphasized that while acupuncture may support existing treatments in suitable patients, it is not a standard primary treatment.
Dr. Aksoy noted that RLS symptoms—such as tingling, pulling, or discomfort in the legs that intensify during the evening or night—can significantly impact sleep quality and daily life. He cautioned against self-diagnosing every nocturnal leg discomfort as RLS, stating that symptoms must be evaluated by a neurology specialist to rule out other conditions like iron deficiency, metabolic issues, kidney disease, or side effects from medications.
Effective management requires a personalized approach. Dr. Aksoy highlighted the importance of blood tests to assess iron stores and suggested that treating underlying causes, such as iron deficiency, should be a priority. Treatment plans should consider the patient's clinical status, lifestyle, sleep patterns, and concurrent medical conditions.
