Acupuncture suggested for joint pain caused by breast cancer hormone therapy
Dr. Onur Aksoy, a radiology specialist and acupuncturist at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, has highlighted acupuncture as a scientifically supported complementary method for managing joint pain and stiffness caused by certain cancer treatments.
Specifically, aromatase inhibitors used in hormone-sensitive breast cancer treatments can lead to significant pain and stiffness in the hands, knees, hips, and shoulders. These side effects can impair daily activities such as walking or climbing stairs and may even discourage patients from continuing their necessary medical treatments.
Dr. Aksoy noted that acupuncture is recommended in clinical guidelines published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO). He emphasized that acupuncture is intended to support existing medical treatments and improve patient quality of life by managing pain, rather than replacing cancer treatment itself.
