ADA and EASD issue new type 2 diabetes management guidelines

New clinical consensus guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) signal a paradigm shift in the management of type 2 diabetes. The updated recommendations move beyond simple glycemic control to a holistic approach focused on protecting vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, and liver, while also managing weight and improving overall quality of life.

The guidelines suggest the early use of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 therapies to mitigate long-term risks. Lifestyle interventions, such as personalized nutrition and physical activity, remain foundational. Notably, a weight loss of at least 10% in the early stages of the disease may contribute to diabetes remission in some patients.

Medical experts also highlight the growing connection between diabetes and cognitive health. While cardiovascular mortality has decreased, there is a rising prevalence of dementia among diabetic patients. Research suggests that metabolic and inflammatory damage from diabetes may manifest as neurodegeneration, contributing to vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease through processes like cerebral microangiopathy.
