Dominican journalists receive honors and leadership updates

In the Dominican Republic, several key developments have occurred within the journalism sector. Dr. Julio Landrón de la Rosa, Executive Director of the National Health Service (SNS), was recognized by the Sánchez Ramírez branch of the Dominican College of Journalists (CDP) during the second Journalism Gala. The award honored his professional career, his contributions to the province, and his commitment to public service and vulnerable populations. Landrón emphasized that transparent communication between public institutions and the media is a responsibility to the citizenry.

In a separate institutional milestone, Ana Yberka Guzmán Calcaño (Ada Guzmán) was elected president of the Health Journalists Circle (CIPESA) for the 2026-2028 term. Leading the ‘CIPESA Somos Todos’ slate, Guzmán secured her position with a 62% voter turnout, which officials described as a historic level of participation for the 30-year-old organization. Her administration aims to focus on the professional development, well-being, and dignity of health journalists.

Additionally, Dominican journalists José Monegro and Nuria Piera were re-elected to the Board of Directors of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) for the 2026-2027 period. Their re-election took place during the 82nd General Assembly held in Bogotá, Colombia, ensuring continued Dominican representation in the international organization dedicated to defending press freedom across the Americas.
