Child Presence Detection systems face scrutiny amid vehicle heat risks
Technical analyses and safety warnings have highlighted the critical importance of Child Presence Detection (CPD) systems in vehicles to prevent heatstroke. Testing by ADAC shows that car interiors can reach temperatures exceeding 60 degrees Celsius within 90 minutes when exposed to direct sunlight, creating lethal conditions for children who regulate body temperature less efficiently than adults.
CPD technologies are categorized into two types: direct and indirect. Direct systems use advanced sensors such as radar, cameras, or ultrasound to detect vital signs like breathing or movement, even if a child is covered by a blanket. In contrast, indirect systems rely on deductive data, such as whether a rear door was opened or a seatbelt was fastened, serving only as a preventive reminder rather than a definitive detection of a child's presence.
In addition to child safety, experts warn against leaving sensitive items in vehicles during high temperatures. Heat can compromise the efficacy of medications like insulin and antibiotics, damage cosmetics, deform eyewear, and cause pressurized aerosols or lithium-ion batteries in electronic devices to pose safety risks.
