ADAC finds half of German autobahn rest areas rated inadequate

The ADAC tested 50 unstaffed rest areas on Germany’s major autobahns. In the latest assessment, 46 % of the sites received a rating of “mangelhaft” (poor) or “sehr mangelhaft” (very poor), while only 18 % were rated “gut” (good) and none achieved a “sehr gut” (very good) grade. The biggest deficiency was in the sanitary facilities – 62 % were rated poor or very poor, with many toilets closed, lacking toilet paper, soap dispensers or functional hand‑dryers. The quality has declined sharply from 2022, when 40 % of the sites were judged good.

Safety and cleanliness were also problem areas: 96 % of the locations showed signs of vandalism, lighting was often insufficient and emergency call boxes were missing on many sites. While the “traffic and parking” category scored relatively well, there were frequent gaps in parking spaces for trailers and caravans. External amenities were weak, with only two playgrounds among the 50 sites and no fresh‑water supply for motorhomes.

Regional results showed especially poor scores in Bavaria and Hessen, where several sites ranked among the bottom of the national list. The ADAC urges the Autobahn‑GmbH to increase cleaning frequency, modernise facilities and improve safety measures to meet basic traveller expectations.
