ADAC safety tips for driving during storms
To maintain control during high winds, drivers should prioritize concentration and reduced speed. The ADAC recommends avoiding loud music or intense conversations and keeping both hands on the steering wheel to allow for quick, controlled reactions.
Drivers should increase following distances and maintain extra space from the sides of the road to account for vehicles potentially swerving due to gusts. High-profile vehicles, such as vans, buses, trucks, caravans, and those with roof boxes or bicycles, are particularly vulnerable to wind gusts.
If a vehicle with a trailer becomes unstable, drivers should reduce speed and brake to stabilize the load, but only after checking rearview mirrors to ensure they do not endanger others. Hectic steering movements should be avoided to prevent skidding.
