ADAC warns of heavy fines for self‑removal of wasp nests in Germany

The ADAC Zuhause insurance arm advises that wasp and hornet nests on balconies, in roof spaces or shutters must not be removed by residents. The insects are protected species and improper handling can trigger fines that in some German states exceed €50,000. A recent ADAC survey of 2,077 adults found 72 % now know the legal risks and 62 % feel stressed when near a nest. Allergic household members are especially vulnerable, with stings to the throat or mouth potentially dangerous even without an allergy. The ADAC recommends keeping calm, avoiding agitation of the nest, and contacting a qualified professional through its Schutzbrief network when removal is truly necessary. Not every nest requires removal; coexistence is possible in many cases.
