Road safety experts warn of increased autumn wildlife collision risks

Automobile clubs and police authorities in Germany and Austria are warning of increased road risks during the autumn season. Key hazards include reduced visibility due to fog, wet leaves, and darkness, alongside a significant rise in wildlife collisions.

In Germany, the ADAC and police note that wildlife activity increases during twilight hours, which often coincide with rush hour. Factors such as mating seasons and agricultural harvesting further drive animals toward roads. Experts advise drivers to maintain greater distance, reduce speed, and ensure headlights are functional. In the event of a collision, drivers are urged to prioritize safety and secure the accident site.

In Austria, the ÖAMTC warns against the dangerous reflex of swerving to avoid animals. Experts recommend that if braking distance is insufficient, drivers should prioritize staying in their lane to avoid hitting oncoming traffic or obstacles, rather than making sudden, unpredictable maneuvers.
