Adaklu teenage pregnancy cases rise to 120 in 2025
Teenage pregnancy cases in the Adaklu district of Ghana's Volta Region have risen to 120 in 2025, up from 109 cases recorded in 2024. Health officials noted that four of the recent cases involved girls aged between 10 and 14, while 116 cases involved those aged 15 to 19.
Child protection advocates attribute this increase to poverty, parental neglect, and significant gaps in communication between adolescents and their caregivers. A 2021 baseline study in the district revealed that 87.5 per cent of surveyed teenagers had never discussed sexual issues with their fathers, and only 12.5 per cent had discussed them with their mothers.
In response, organizations including Friends of Adaklu and SOS Children's Villages Ghana, through the Norway-funded NORAD project, are working with local communities to strengthen family support systems. Advocates emphasize the need for open dialogue and improved parental care to protect vulnerable children.
