Adalah Center warns of West Bank annexation risk
The Adalah Center has issued a warning against a proposal to transfer law enforcement authority regarding settlers in the West Bank from the Israeli military to the Israeli police. The human rights organization stated that such a move would expand the application of Israeli domestic law within the occupied territories, which it argues violates international humanitarian law.
The center claims this shift serves as a step toward the formal annexation of the West Bank and would deepen the existing apartheid system. Adalah has formally petitioned the Israeli Defense Minister, the government's legal advisor, the military advocate general, and the Central Command commander to cancel the proposal.
The warning follows reports that Defense Minister Israel Katz directed the military to develop a plan for transferring jurisdiction over settler violence to the police. Adalah noted that because the Israeli police derive their authority from Knesset laws, transferring power to them would bypass the legal framework governing the West Bank as occupied land. The center also referenced a July 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion, which noted that expanding Israeli law in the region reinforces Israeli control.
