NBA commissioner Adam Silver said WNBA star Caitlin Clark has become a "political football" and is being treated "incredibly unfairly" after a June 24 on‑court incident in which Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas placed her fist on Clark's neck. The league later upgraded the play to a flagrant‑2 foul and suspended Thomas for one game.

The incident sparked a broader backlash, with a group of 11 Republican lawmakers, led by Rep. August Pfluger, sending a letter to the WNBA warning of possible DOJ, Labor or EEOC action if the league does not better protect Clark. Players involved have reported death threats and racial abuse online. The WNBA issued a statement condemning all forms of hate.

The debate over who represents the league’s image also intensified, as former ESPN host Jemele Hill argued that veteran star A'ja Wilson, not Clark, should be considered the face of the WNBA despite Clark’s rising popularity and record attendance draws.
