Jeanie Buss sues siblings to block sale of Lakers stake
Jeanie Buss has filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court to block her five siblings from selling the Buss family’s remaining 17.8% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers. The legal action follows a vote by her siblings to join a sale to a group led by Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner, a transaction valued at $12.5 billion.
In her 97-page filing, Jeanie Buss characterizes her siblings' actions as 'devious' and alleges they are attempting to secretly orchestrate a deal to remove her as the team’s governor. Under NBA regulations, a governor must maintain at least a 15% ownership stake; selling the remaining family interest would cause her to lose this position.
Jeanie is also seeking the removal of Joey and Janie Buss as co-trustees of the family trust, alleging a breach of fiduciary duty and violations of a 2017 court order. Her legal team argues that the sale is financially disadvantageous given the franchise's rapidly increasing value. A court hearing is scheduled for November 5.
