Adam Silver urges Portland Trail Blazers to remain in city amid arena disputes

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed strong opposition to the potential relocation of the Portland Trail Blazers, stating he would consider it ‘a failure’ if the franchise leaves the city.

The tension stems from ongoing disputes between new Blazers owner Tom Dundon and Portland city officials regarding the Moda Center. Key points of contention include high rent, the need for significant renovations, and the terms of a future lease. Silver noted that the current arena ranks at the bottom of the league in terms of modernity and emphasized the community's need for a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting concerts, conventions, and other multi-use events.

While a framework for $586 million in public funding for renovations exists, the city and county have yet to agree on the specific terms. A critical deadline approaches on December 17, following the Portland City Council, as $365 million in state funds committed via Senate Bill 1501 is set to expire on December 31. With the team's current lease expiring in October 2030, the failure to secure these funds could significantly jeopardize the franchise's future in Oregon.
