Adam Wingard confirms ThunderCats film remains in development

Director Adam Wingard has confirmed that his planned ThunderCats film is still in development, though it is not currently his primary focus. While promoting his new film, Onslaught, Wingard stated that the project is “not dead” and “lives,” but production has been paused to accommodate other commitments.

Wingard and co-writer Simon Barrett completed a new draft of the script at the beginning of this year, but work was subsequently put on hold due to the production of Onslaught. The director noted that his career involves shifting priorities, and while the project remains active, he has not provided a specific timeline for when work will resume.

Originally announced in 2021, the film is intended to be a hybrid CGI production that maintains the aesthetic of the original 1980s animated series rather than a traditional live-action adaptation. Separately, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation previously announced an animated ThunderCats project at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, though it remains unclear if this is a separate production from Wingard’s hybrid vision.
