Adama Barrow pledges peaceful December elections in The Gambia

President Adama Barrow has pledged to ensure a peaceful and credible presidential election in The Gambia, scheduled for December 5. During a meeting with International IDEA founder Dr. Muhammad Ibn Chambas, Barrow expressed commitment to maintaining an open political environment, citing press freedom and political debates as indicators of democratic progress.

International IDEA is working with the Independent Electoral Commission to engage political parties and establish a code of conduct to promote peaceful competition. Dr. Chambas urged political actors to focus on a “competition of ideas” rather than confrontation to avoid destabilizing the country.

In a separate high-level meeting at State House, President Barrow met with a delegation of Islamic leaders, including members of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council. He described religious leaders as indispensable to national stability and urged them to promote messages of peace, reconciliation, and coexistence as political activities gain momentum across the nation.
