Adamantina transfers 50 tortoises to wildlife rehabilitation center

The city of Adamantina, in the interior of São Paulo, has transferred 50 tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonaria) from Euclides Romanini Square to the Wildlife Screening and Rehabilitation Center (Cetras-SP). This operation was a coordinated effort between the local government, the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of São Paulo (MPSP), and Cetras-SP to address overcrowding and environmental concerns in the urban area.

The relocation follows an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office into the presence of approximately 200 wild and exotic animals in the square, a matter raised by the Environmental Military Police due to potential risks to public health and ecological balance. This move is the second major phase of the removal project; in June, 71 red-footed tortoises were also transferred to Cetras.

The transport was conducted by a specialized company using appropriate vehicles, accompanied by veterinarians to ensure the animals' well-being and minimize stress. While the tortoises have been moved, other species such as ducks, geese, and terrapins remain in the area. The municipal administration noted that the complete removal of animals is currently limited by the availability of vacancies in specialized institutions.
