Adamawa launches CNG tricycle scheme to boost youth employment
The Adamawa State Government, in partnership with the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), has launched a youth empowerment initiative in Yola involving the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles. The programme aims to boost transportation, employment, and income generation by providing beneficiaries with tricycles under an installment payment arrangement.
This rollout marks CREDICORP’s expansion into Nigeria’s North-East. The initiative utilizes locally assembled CNG tricycles supplied by Bajaj to align with the federal government’s energy transition agenda. By utilizing CNG, the scheme intends to reduce operating costs for riders, with reports suggesting fuel expenses could be reduced to approximately one-third of traditional petrol costs.
The programme involves several partners, including Subsidy Project Global Consult, Les Shego Microfinance Bank, and Ashion Agrofinance Bank, to manage financing and credit administration. Officials emphasized that the vehicles are intended as productive economic assets rather than gifts, requiring beneficiaries to maintain them and adhere to repayment terms.
