Adamawa State launches cancer patient insurance and awareness campaign
In Adamawa State, Nigeria, a new health insurance scheme will provide two years of coverage for 100 cancer patients to alleviate the financial burden of treatment. The initiative was announced by the First Lady, Hajiya Lami Fintiri, during the 2026 Pinktober North-East Campaign held at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital in Yola.
The insurance scheme will be implemented through the Fresh Air Pro-Life Empowerment Foundation in collaboration with the ‘First Ladies Against Cancer’ organization. This effort coincides with a partnership between the Adamawa government and the Cancer Consciousness Initiative, an NGO, aimed at improving access to early diagnosis and treatment.
The three-day campaign, themed ‘Awareness to Access’, focuses on overcoming barriers to care. Dr. Annette Ayuba, Executive Officer of the initiative, noted that while awareness is important, financial constraints often prevent women from accessing necessary diagnostic services. The campaign includes breast examinations, ultrasound scans, biopsies, and cervical examinations. Additionally, community social navigators will be utilized to help patients manage medical appointments and referrals.
