Adams River sockeye salmon run to be celebrated at Salute to the Sockeye

The 2026 Salute to the Sockeye festival will celebrate the Adams River sockeye salmon run at Tsútswecw Provincial Park. The event, running from October 9 to 25, aims to honor the salmon and celebrate Indigenous culture, specifically that of the Secwépemc people.

Despite the festivities, salmon returns are significantly lower than anticipated. The Pacific Salmon Commission, Fraser River Panel, initially forecasted 7.7 million returns, but an August 25 estimate lowered that figure to 2.8 million.

The festival is hosted by the Adams River Salmon Society and Skwlāx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw, alongside partner bands including Adams Lake, Neskonlith, Splatsin, and Shuswap. A new educational initiative involves Skwlāx Fisheries and the Secwépemc Fisheries Council, which will host an education tent to teach more than 5,000 students about the importance of salmon to Indigenous ways of life and local ecosystems.
