Adana botanical garden hosts thriving collection of giant cacti

The Ali Nihat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden at Çukurova University in Adana, Turkey, is home to a diverse collection of cacti and succulents that have grown to tree-like proportions. Spanning approximately 200 decares, the garden utilizes volcanic rock-enriched soil to support these species, which are not native to the region but have successfully adapted to the local climate.

Serpil Demirci Kayıran, Director of the Botanical Garden Research Center, notes that Adana’s high temperatures and long sunny periods provide ideal conditions for these plants. Specifically, the Agave Americana, also known as ‘Sarı Sabır’, exhibits a unique life cycle where the parent plant dies after blooming once every 15 years, leaving behind offspring to continue the species.

Due to their ability to store water in their stems and leaves, these succulents thrive in Adana’s heat, even when temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius, requiring very little supplemental water.
