Adana burması gold bracelet receives official geographical indication

The Adana burması, a traditional gold bracelet synonymous with the city of Adana, has officially received a geographical indication registration from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. This certification aims to protect the cultural heritage of the jewelry and ensure its preservation for future generations.

The history of the Adana burması is believed to date back to the Hellenistic period, with some roots tracing to the 4th century BC. Archaeological findings featuring snake-head motifs suggest these items were used as trade tools in eras before coinage. While modern versions have replaced snake heads with locking systems, the fundamental form remains consistent.

Production involves melting 24-karat gold with copper to reach 22-karat purity at temperatures around 1000 degrees Celsius. The metal is drawn into long wires and twisted to create characteristic models, including 7-strand, 12-strand, diamond-cut, and almond-head designs. Due to low labor costs and minimal loss during production, the bracelets are popular both as jewelry and as gold investments.
