Adana expands avocado production as harvest prices decline
In Adana, Turkey, farmers are increasingly diversifying their crops by turning to tropical fruits, specifically avocado. Approximately 5,000 decares of land are currently dedicated to avocado cultivation, with a projected yield of 68,000 tons for 2025.
As the harvest progresses, the price of avocados has seen a decline. While early harvest prices reached 180 TL per kilogram, current prices have dropped to approximately 110 TL per kilogram depending on the variety.
Local producer Özen Özer, who manages 50 decares of land in the Yumurtalık district, noted that avocado trees are long-lived and become more productive and flavorful as they age. He reported that a single tree can yield up to 80 kilograms of fruit, with his own orchard producing between 30 and 40 tons annually.
