Akın Gürlek addresses İBB trial and organized crime investigations
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has addressed several high-profile legal and criminal matters in Turkey. Regarding the ongoing trial of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) President Ekrem İmamoğlu, Gürlek criticized the defendant for allegedly turning the courtroom into a political arena and dismissed claims that the judiciary was suppressing his defense.
In the fight against organized crime, Gürlek detailed investigations into the Alihan Kuriş syndicate, noting that trustees have been appointed to 15 companies and that authorities are tracking the movement of illicit funds to Cologne, Germany. He also emphasized a broader crackdown on new-generation crime groups, stating that measures have been applied to the assets of 880 suspects.
Additionally, the Minister discussed the upcoming second phase of the 12th Judicial Package, which aims to accelerate trials and limit the use of expert witnesses in legal interpretations to prevent delays.
