Adana driver convicted after fatal drunk crash killing Ümmü Elsun

On 7 July, 23‑year‑old Ümmü Elsun was struck while crossing a pedestrian lane on Bülent Angın Boulevard in Seyhan, Adana. The driver of the minibuss, 45‑year‑old Mehmet L., was recorded by the vehicle’s dash‑cam hitting the young woman and then fleeing the scene.

Police located the suspect driving through Namık Kemal neighbourhood, arrested him and performed an alcohol test that showed a blood‑alcohol level of 2.63 ‰. He was charged with drunk‑driving and hit‑and‑run, received a administrative fine of 100 000 TL, had his licence suspended for two years and was later sentenced to prison.

The incident was captured on security footage, which showed the impact and the driver’s departure. The tragedy sparked local outrage over pedestrian safety and enforcement of traffic laws.
