Adani Power begins ₹48,000-crore thermal project in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone for a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant by Adani Power Limited in the Chapar area of Dhubri district. The project represents an investment of approximately ₹48,000 crore and is part of a larger ₹63,000-crore power sector investment by the Adani Group in the state.

The facility is expected to consist of four 800 MW units and is scheduled for phased commissioning starting in December 2030. The project is anticipated to create up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 5,000 permanent jobs once operational. Jeet Adani, Director of the Adani Group, noted that the group's total business in Assam is expected to generate around 40,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.

The project has faced scrutiny regarding land use. Reports indicate the plant is located on land where approximately 1,400 Bengali-origin Muslim families were evicted in July 2025. While residents dispute rehabilitation claims, Adani Power informed the Union environment ministry that there were no habitations at the site, implying no resettlement is required.
