Adaptability and cognitive traits drive corporate innovation success

Recent research and literature highlight the critical role of adaptability and specific cognitive traits in driving corporate innovation.

In the book ‘The Adaptive Company’, authors Johanna Ober-Sundermeyer and René Korte argue that long-term success depends on a company’s ability to continuously adjust to changing conditions rather than relying on individual innovations. Drawing on experiences from Melitta, they present a 15-module model where adaptability is treated as a core management competency to prevent companies from becoming trapped by past successes.

Complementing this, a study by the Free University of Bozen, published in the journal Technovation, identifies specific personality traits that predict the quality of business ideas. While divergent thinking helps generate a high quantity of ideas, the study found that convergent thinking—the ability to synthesize diverse information into a single, effective solution—is more closely linked to high-quality concepts. Other key predictors of successful innovation include high openness to experience and extensive practical experience in creative activities.
