Greece ports and maritime sector face major strikes on October 30
A series of coordinated labor actions are scheduled for Friday, October 30, across Greece's maritime and public sectors. The Federation of Permanent Port Employees of Greece (OMYLE) has declared a three-hour work stoppage from 10:00 to 13:00 as part of a pan-European mobilization.
Simultaneously, three maritime unions—PEMENT, ‘O Stephenson’, and PENEN—have announced a 24-hour strike. This action is expected to leave vessels moored at seven major ports: Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patras, Igoumenitsa, Elefsina, and the Rio-Antirrio ferry line, effectively halting maritime transport.
The strikes are driven by several key demands, including a 12% increase in collective bargaining agreements, the establishment of seven-hour workdays, and improved safety measures for sailors operating in conflict-prone maritime zones. Workers also expressed concerns regarding the use of port facilities for military operations and the impact of automation on employment.
In support of the port workers, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (ADEDY) has announced a four-hour work stoppage for public employees in the regions of Attica, Achaia, and Thesprotia.
