Adeje and two other Tenerife municipalities exceed resident population in tourist beds
In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, three municipalities—Adeje, Santiago del Teide, and Valle Gran Rey—now have more registered tourist beds than local residents.
According to calculations based on open data from the Government of the Canary Islands using the Defert index, Adeje leads the province with 146.7 tourist beds per 100 inhabitants. With a resident population of 50,021, the municipality has 73,365 registered tourist beds, exceeding the resident count by approximately 23,000. This capacity is distributed among hotels, apartments, rural houses, and vacation rentals.
The data highlights significant regional inequality, as the south and west of Tenerife experience high tourism pressure, while metropolitan municipalities maintain very low ratios of tourist beds per resident.
