Adelaide researchers test ultrasound scan to predict heart surgery risks

Researchers at Calvary Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide are conducting a study to determine if a non-invasive bedside ultrasound scan can predict pulmonary complications in heart surgery patients.

Currently, between 10% and 25% of post-operative cardiac patients experience serious lung complications, which can lead to delayed mobilization and extended hospital stays. The study focuses on measuring the rectus femoris, a major thigh muscle, to identify early signs of post-operative decline.

Dr. Rosa Virgara, a clinical physiotherapist and researcher, noted that tracking muscle loss in real time could serve as an objective way to monitor patient deterioration and provide early warning signs for pneumonia or other lung issues. The project is supported by a $60,000 grant from Health Translation SA through the Medical Research Future Fund Catalyst Grant Scheme.
