Adelaide University to take control of SAHMRI in landmark research deal

A landmark agreement has been reached to secure the long-term future of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). Under the new deal, Adelaide University will assume financial and governance control of the institute, aiming to create an integrated health and medical research corridor along Adelaide’s North Terrace.

As part of the restructuring, the South Australian Government and Flinders University will relinquish their membership in SAHMRI, leaving Adelaide University as the sole governing member. Existing research projects led by Flinders University are expected to transition to that institution over the next two years.

Other organizational shifts include the separation of the Australian Bragg Centre’s proton therapy work from SAHMRI to align with the state government, and the transition of the Molecular Imaging Therapy and Research Unit (MITRU) to SA Health. These reforms are intended to provide stability for researchers and industry partners while enhancing South Australia’s ability to attract scientific talent and research investment.
