Spanish political leaders debate railway safety and regional funding ahead of November 29 elections

As Spain approaches the general elections on November 29, political leaders are centering their campaigns on railway safety and regional financing models. Following a fatal train accident in Urda that resulted in 69 deaths, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party (PP), has criticized the government's management of transport infrastructure. Feijóo has pledged to audit railway security systems and promised that, if elected, no autonomous community would receive singular financing agreements similar to the one reached between the government and ERC for Catalonia, except in cases of emergencies or catastrophes.

In Andalusia, Juanma Moreno has called for voters to use the upcoming election to hold the PSOE accountable for recent railway tragedies and alleged irregularities in the management of European funds. Meanwhile, PP candidates in various provinces, such as Jorge Saavedra in Granada and Sonia González in Ciudad Real, have emphasized the need for improved regional connectivity and secure rail services.

In response, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has characterized the leadership of Feijóo and Vox leader Santiago Abascal as a "journey to the past." Speaking in Tarragona, Sánchez urged voters to mobilize in mass to prevent what he described as an involution of rights and liberties, asserting that the country requires continued progress rather than a return to previous political models.
