Adem Beqiri buried after 27 years following identification
The family of Adem Beqiri held a burial ceremony in the village of Pantinë, Vushtrri, marking the end of a 27-year wait to lay him to rest. Beqiri, a member of the group known as the ‘Intellectuals’—which included doctors, professors, and activists—disappeared on April 19, 1999, during the Kosovo war. He was forcibly disappeared by Serbian forces alongside 22 others while traveling toward Montenegro.
Beqiri’s remains were recovered from a mass grave in the Zubin Potok area and identified through DNA analysis. The same process also identified the remains of his companions, Idriz Rrecajt and Sali Mëziu. In addition to the burial, a commemorative gathering was held in Mitrovica to honor Beqiri’s life and contributions.
The Government Commission on Missing Persons expressed its commitment to continuing work with relevant institutions to clarify the fates and locations of those still missing from the conflict.
